Appellate Attorneys for Samsung Executive Obtain Suspended Sentence in Bribery Case
Posted on 5 February, 2018 at 11:15 |
An appellate court has set Samsung Electronics Co. Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee free. According to Bloomberg, appellate attorneys for the Samsung executive appealed his sentence resulting in a South Korean appeals court suspending his sentence.
Mr. Lee's grandfather founded Samsung eighty years ago. Lee was convicted of giving bribes to government officials in an attempt to secure government support of a merger. The appeals court found the Lee was "browbeat" by the government into giving bribes stressing that penalties for bribery should be more heavily imposed upon government officials. The court noted that “[t]he essence of this case is that the defendant passively answered to political power.”
