Appellate Attorneys Argue LGBTQ Rights in Mississippi
Posted on 4 April, 2017 at 14:35 |
Appellate attorneys argued before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals over a "Mississippi law that would let merchants and government employees cite religious beliefs to deny services to same-sex couples." According to NBC News, a federal court judge stopped the law before it took effect last July "ruling it unconstitutionally establishes preferred beliefs and creates unequal treatment for LGBTQ people."
Before the law took effect, a group of plaintiffs sued arguing that the law involves a religious debate affording one side of the debate special protections. The lower court sided with the plaintiffs and blocked the law. On appeal, although the governor supported and signed the law, the "Mississippi Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood declined to appeal the ruling that blocked the law from taking effect." Instead the appeal is being handled by private attorneys including some attorneys working for the groups who helped write the law.
